About Us
We are a small independent screenprinting studio based in Copenhagen, Denmark. We thrive on making lovely and playful handprinted posters which we hope you will cherish on your walls.
We started handprinting t-shirts and small posters back in 2014 at a local Library and have loved doing it ever since. We now have our own, and much more professional setup, where we can print up to 70x100cm art prints and up to 6 colors textile prints.
What is screenprinting?
Screenprinting (also known as silkscreen printing or serigraphic printing) is a technique where you force ink through a mesh on the screens. The mesh used to be of silk, therefore the name silkscreen printing. Nowadays the mesh is made of polyester, that holds better details, tension and is durable for a longer time. The screens are prepped with a UV sensitive emulsion, which you can expose with your design. You expose the screens by blocking out the emulsion with a transparent sheet that contains your graphic. The blacked out places on the positive will block the UV light, and then you can wash out your graphics, which haven't been exposed. When the screens are dry, you can place them on your press and print your colored inks through the openings of the screen. You force the ink through the mesh by hand with a squeegee (a tool of wood or metal, that holds a piece of rubber in different softness) that will gently slide over the screen. This technique requires the artwork to be built up layer by layer, and you can play a lot with the way the colors are matching each other or make an overlay effect.
All the posters we print are made with waterbased inks on thick acid free paper. Some editions are on pure white paper, while others are printed on creamy off-white paper for a lovely vintage feel. Some are made on super limited special effect paper with holographic or golden surface.
All the prints are signed and numbered by the artist, either on the front or on the back of the print. Most of our releases come with a "Certificate of Authenticity", that has been signed by the artist and printer. The CoA ensures that you have an original hand crafted product, but also tells you a bit more of the technical stuff behind the print.
Runes vision for the studio "Ice Screen Printing", has always been to collaborate with other artists and push his creative skills in the printed medium. It has been a dream of his to release quality handprinted goods in collaboration with talented artists. And here we are, 8 years later, Handprinted.dk is finally open for business.
We are working closely together with the artist to make sure that the artist's touch comes to show in the pieces, but also to experiment with the artist's color palette and vision to make something unique. Some prints are made from the reference of an original painting/drawing and some are done with handpainted layers to create a unique final art print.
Each print has been handprinted layer by layer and all colors have been handmixed specially for each print. For some prints the whole process of making all the pieces fit together can take weeks to plan. New screens, testprints, tweaking of colors. All part of the amazing process of Screen Printing.
We are quite happy with the color blending technique known as "Split fountains" or "Iris print" where multiple colors are layed down on the screen and for each layer printed, the colors will blend and move around, making all the prints even more unique.
We love to use special effect colors like neon or metallic, giving the final print that extra kick. We are also very fond of making a spot glossy layer, where we choose elements on the prints that we want to give extra shine and attention or even make hidden messages on the print. Really using the lovely possibilities of the screenprinting technique that your average digital printer can't produce.
"I'm okay with failure"
Since we are humans (or at least I think we are) all prints are not perfect, but screenprints doesn't have to be perfectly the same. There’s a beauty in the textures showing through the layers of inks and the slight mis alignments makes the process of layers come to show. Although we love to finish a whole stack of perfectly registered prints, we see a beauty in the bits of non perfect. And it's handprinted "mitsakes will hpapen".
The print is shipped to you in a thick heavy duty cardboard tube and we have carefully wrapped your print in paper for protection and for easier access when the tube has arrived safely at your destination.
We have pickup places around Copenhagen where you can see some of the prints we are selling, but also for easy shipment and pickup for you.
We hope that you like the products and collabs here at our webshop and we hope that you will follow us on social media to see updates on future releases and events.
